Privacy Policy — Gridmark

Last updated: 2026-06-15

Gridmark ("the Extension") is a Chrome extension (Manifest V3) that replaces the new-tab page with your Chrome bookmarks shown as a clickable icon grid, along with a clock, a search box, and an optional background image. The Extension has no servers of its own, uses no analytics or advertising, and does not collect, transmit, share, or sell your personal data to the developer or to any third party for tracking purposes. The sections below describe exactly what data the Extension touches and where that data stays.

Bookmarks

The Extension reads your Chrome bookmarks in order to display them as the new-tab grid. When you rename, add, delete, or reorder a tile, the Extension writes that change back to your Chrome bookmarks. All of this happens locally inside your browser. Your bookmarks are never sent to the developer or to any third-party server by the Extension.

Settings and local storage

You can remove all of this data at any time by removing the Extension from Chrome.

Favicons

By default, site icons are loaded from Chrome's built-in local favicon cache, which requires no network request.

The Extension includes an optional "network favicon fallback" setting that is turned OFF by default. While it is off, the Extension makes no external network requests. If you turn it on, then whenever a local favicon is missing the Extension requests an icon from Google's favicon service (https://www.google.com/s2/favicons), sending only the site's domain name (hostname) for that bookmark. Internal, private, localhost, and IP-address hosts are never sent. Any request you make this way is handled by Google under Google's Privacy Policy.

Search

When you type a query in the search box and submit it, the query is sent to the search engine you selected (Google, Naver, DuckDuckGo, or Bing) — exactly as if you had typed it on that engine's own site. The Extension does not log, store, or transmit your search queries anywhere else.

What the Extension does not collect

Permissions and why they are needed

PermissionWhy it is requested
bookmarksRead your bookmarks to display the grid, and write back rename / add / delete / reorder changes you make. Processed locally.
faviconAccess Chrome's local favicon cache to show site icons without any network request.
storageSave your preferences and your background image / tile-icon data.
unlimitedStorageAllow a background image (up to ~50 MB) and icon data to be stored locally without hitting the default storage quota.

The Extension requests no host permissions and no access to <all_urls> or to the pages you visit.

Third-party services

The Extension bundles no third-party analytics SDKs, advertising networks, crash reporters, or telemetry tools. The only external service it can contact is Google's favicon service, and only if you explicitly enable the optional network favicon fallback described above.

Children's privacy

The Extension does not collect personal data and is not directed at children. It is suitable for general audiences.
